Green Elyria

“Educational information set to create a healthier environment”

RECYCLING

The recycling program will be first introduced to area business owners, expressing to them the benefits of recycling for both environmental and cost saving measures.

COMPOSTING

Like the recycling program, the composting effort will also be rolled out to small business owners for the same reasons. I have currently reached out to the Madden Brothers, who deal with composting, as well as a company out of Erie County. Both companies pay individuals on a per pound rate in the form of gift cards, which help promote area businesses. UPDATE: EMH, Donna’s Diner, Puffers Floral Shoppe, Carlisle Cafe, and Wesleyan Village are all now composting.

GREEN ROOFS or ROOFTOP GARDENS

Many downtown businesses have nice flat roofs and also have tenants in apartments below. The green roofs will allow the tenants and business owners the ability to have a garden right close to their homes or businesses. This will be approached by introducing the “garden soxx” to the building owners to show them the benefits and the convenience of such a system. UPDATE: We have spoken with some building owners and also schools about doing studies on buildings in terms of how much weight they can hold and where these could and could not be placed. We are looking for anyone interested in participating in or “hosting” either a Green Roof or Roof Top Garden.

EDUCATIONAL ACCESS

We are working to show the residents how urban farming and other green methods will not only help improve the environment, but also keep money in their wallets.

EXPANSION OF GREEN SPACE AND PARKS

Our group is looking into the addition of park space and even a volunteer park in downtown Elyria.
