“Building ties with safety forces and community leaders”
YOUNG ELYRIANS
We all know about the Young Democrats and the Young Republicans of Lorain County. The Young Elyrians will establish an early sense of community and the sense of pride in our city. The plan will call for having school-aged kids realize the good things about Elyria and about why they should want to stay here and invest their time in our city.
TAKE BACK ELYRIA
(Name might change to Take Charge Elyria)
We will organize Health and Safety events to educate the public about ways to keep safe inside their homes and in their neighborhoods.
COMMUNITY MEETINGS (OPEN HOUSES)
This would allow an inside look at how and why our tax dollars are spent they way they are with city government. These will be held at City Hall or at a recreation center where the residents could be enlightened on how and why funds cannot be spent on certain things where the residents might think they should be. Ward councilpersons, as well as the city auditor and law director, would be asked to speak. These meetings would only take place once a quarter.
COMMUNITY CORNERS
Unlike the block watches, this effort would be to encourage neighborhoods within Elyria to do group events like pot-lucks and garage sales, as well as block parties to get residents outside of their homes, meeting new people and working to try and grow stronger communities.
(Youngstown 2010 is working on a similar project as well). UPDATE: Working with Open Door about a partnership where we can get this project off the ground and into action. Church of the Open Door’s key values are close to that of Invest Elyria in the terms of strengthening the sense of community in our city.
